Lo scopo della fondazione consiste nella continuazione e nella promozione delle ricerche nel campo solare attraverso il già Istituto Ricerche Solari (IRSOL) di Locarno-Monti, così come praticato in passato dalla Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Bonn e per essa dalle Università di Göttingen e di Friborgo in Brisgovia, nonché nella formazione di un archivio di documentazione sulle ricerche solari da mettere a disposizione degli studiosi, nella collaborazione con altri enti e associazioni aventi analoghe finalità e nell'organizzazione di seminari a carattere astro-fisico di interesse internazionale. Essa provvede pertanto all'acquisto della part. No. 1206 RFD di Locarno e delle apparecchiature e strumenti necessari per la messa in funzione dell'osservatorio.
