Die Stiftung bezweckt, jedes Jahr den aus einem Betrag von CHF 20'000.- bestehenden "Ernst und Hanna Hauenstein-Preis" einer schweizerischen Gemeinde zuzusprechen, die sich um die Erhaltung von auf ihrem Gebiet befindlichen Brunnen (-bauten, -monumenten, -kompositionen), vor allem historischen, sowie ergänzend dazu, um die Erhaltung und Gestaltung des Standortes und der näheren Umgebung dieser Brunnen besonders verdient gemacht hat sowie durch den Preis die damit ausgezeichnete Gemeinde für ihren entsprechenden Einsatz zu belohnen und alle schweizerischen Gemeinden zu solchem Tun anzuspornen und damit die historisch gewachsenen Ortsbilder lebendig zu erhalten.
