Die medizinischen Massnahmen richten sich an hilfsbedürftige Menschen - speziell an hilfsbedürftige Kinder - vor allem in Entwicklungsländern. Die Behandlungen werden ohne Ansehen der Nationalität, der ethnischen Herkunft, der Sprache, des Glaubens, der sozialen Stellung oder der politischen Überzeugung, durchgeführt. Die Erfüllung der Aufgaben erfolgt nach den Grundsätzen von Unparteilichkeit, Unabhängigkeit, Freiwilligkeit und Ehrenamtlichkeit.
