Das Freilichtmuseum soll ein lebendiges kulturelles Zentrum mit Veranstaltungen wie Vorträgen, Tagungen, Seminaren, Kursen, Ausstellungen, kultureller Vermittlung und Publikationen bilden. Die Stiftung erhält insbesondere mit ihrem Angebot an Kursen traditionelles Handwerk und stützt damit das immaterielle Kulturerbe der Schweiz. Sie fördert auch die Kombination von Handwerk und Design. Sie widmet sich Fragen der Volkskunde und der Denkmalpflege. Das Freilichtmuseum und die Stiftung arbeiten mit interessensverwandten Organisationen im In- und Ausland zusammen und unterstützen Bestrebungen zur Vermittlung der vielfältigen Inhalte.
